Becker & Buddhism: On anger, aggression and violence |
Saturday, 01 April 2000 03:00 |
Ernest Becker grasped the insight that a primary motive of mental life is the denial of death. The mechanism for this denial is the construction of a fictional, tragic-heroic self which is the center of our lies, delusions and immortality projects. This insight is also expressed in the Buddhist view that primary causes of suffering are the denial of impermanence (death), the desire for permanence (immortality) and the false imputation of inherent substance to self. In this talk, Ron Leifer, M.D., will attempt to reconcile and synthesize Becker's views and the Buddhist view and apply them to understanding and healing anger, aggression and violence.

What is the relationship between death anxiety and individuation? How can we live with this knowledge to enhance our life and experiences?

A Darwinian Left: Politics, Evolution and Cooperation |
Saturday, 01 April 2000 03:00 |
Although Karl Marx reportedly was very impressed upon reading Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species, and sought Darwin's endorsement of his own third volume of Das Capital, there has traditionally been an uneasiness in the relationship between Leftist political ideologies and evolutionary biology. The truce has usually been one of dividing up the territories - evolutionary biology describes development up to the formation of human beings, at which point the historical dialectic takes over to describe and predict human individual and social behavior.

Play, death, and history in Richard II |
Saturday, 01 April 2000 03:00 |
Most EBF members likely have more than a passing familiarity with Shakespeare's major works. But how many of us can intelligently discuss the play Richard II? This is not the play one is likely to settle down with for pleasure reading. I confess that until recently the last time I read it was years ago in an undergraduate course.

Classical Epicurean Philosophy Prefigured Becker's Analysis of the Source of Evil in Human Society |
Saturday, 01 January 2000 03:00 |
Becker's insight into the fear of death as the primary source of misery among humans was shared by Epicurus twenty three centuries ago. According to Epicurus' analysis, greed was caused by a false fear of death — thus the accumulation of villas, land, money, and the management of vast numbers of slaves and servants in a frantic attempt to secure immortality. A false fear of death also motivated "heroes," like Alexander, to strive incessantly for military glory and to conquer vast territories. A third consequence of the fear of death was political ambition. In the vain hope of immortality, some became obsessed with the pursuit of power, fame, and titles.
